Im Rahmen des internationalen Performance Laboratory Salzburg (PLAS) kommen junge Regisseurinnen und Regisseure aus sechs europäischen Ländern an die Universität Mozarteum, um mit Schauspiel-studierenden des Thomas Bernhard Instituts und Tanzstudierenden der Tanzakademie SEAD das Europa des 21. Jahrhunderts experimentierend auf die Probe zu stellen. Als Ausgangspunkt der szenischen Recherchen dienen Texte und Thesen postkolonialer Theoretiker*innen, wie Frantz Fanon und Dipesh Chakrabarty, die sich dem europäischen Projekt der politischen Moderne und der kulturellen Aufklärung von den subalternen Rändern nähern und es kritisch auf seine Aktualität hin befragen. Europa und seine Bürger, so der Philosoph Achille Mbembe, bilden „mittlerweile nur noch eine weitere Provinz im weltumspannenden Imperium des Kapitalismus“? Wie verhalten sich vor diesem Hintergrund die demokratischen Errungenschaften und die gewaltsame Erfahrung der Kolonialgeschichte zueinander? Welchen Beitrag kann Europa zum Gelingen einer friedlichen globalen Weltordnung leisten?

Die Veranstaltung entsteht in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Theater-Netzwerk Mitos21, zu dem sich einige der einflussreichsten europäischen Theaterhäuser zusammengeschlossen haben, um über Länder- und Sprachgrenzen hinweg den Austausch von europäischen Theaterschaffenden zu fördern.

Within the framework of the international Performance Laboratory Salzburg (PLAS) young theatre directors from six European countries come to the Mozarteum University in order to work with student actors from the Thomas Bernhard Institut and student dancers from the SEAD dance academy to conduct experimental investigations into Europe of the 21^st century. The point of departure for their scenic research will be provided by texts andtheses by postcolonial theoreticians such as Frantz Fanon and Dipesh Chakrabarty who approach the European project of political modernization and cultural enlightenment from its subaltern margins and critically question its currency.  Are Europe and its citizens, as the philosopher Achille Mbembe has written, “now just one more province in the world-wide empire of capitalism”? Against this background, how do Europe‘s democratic accomplishments and the violent experiences of its colonial history impact on each other? And how can Europe contribute to the global success of a peaceful world order?

This event is produced in collaboration with the Mitos21 theatre network in which several of Europe’s most influential producing theatres have joined together to promote exchange between European theatremakers across political and linguistic borders.
